What is firewood?
Firewood is a generic term meaning any wooded material used as a burning fuel. However, Kindled Provisions’ firewood, meets specific criteria to ensure the most efficient and cleanest burning product available.
Firewood is often categorized as green, naturally seasoned, or kiln-dried. Freshly cut logs are considered green firewood. The moisture content in green firewood is 40-60%, which is higher than other type of firewood. It will not burn as efficiently as seasoned or kiln-dried. Seasoned firewood is green firewood that has been aged for several months. Kiln-dried firewood has been heat-treated to remove excess moisture, and that’s our specialty at Kindled Provisions.
What makes kiln-dried firewood special?
Kiln-dried firewood elevates your fire-making experience with its distinct advantages, all thanks to our specialized drying process. This firewood is treated in purpose-built kilns that control moisture levels meticulously, resulting in wood that boasts an average of 12% less moisture than non-kiln-dried alternatives. Heated to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, our kilns ensure thorough drying while eliminating potential pests and mold spores. For your peace of mind, kiln-dried firewood will be certified by the USDA, guaranteeing it is completely free of insects and mold. Experience the difference in quality and performance with our premium kiln-dried firewood!
What is a cord of firewood?
A cord of firewood is a measure of volume equal to 128 cubic feet. This means that utilizing the typical 16″ long firewood pieces, the wood, in stacked form, will measure 4 feet tall by 8 feet long (across) by 4 feet deep. While there may be some generalized average weights for a cord of firewood, the cord measurement is cubic feet volume measurement and does not equate to a weight measurement. The weight will vary greatly depending on wood species, moisture content of the wood, etc.
How can I build a great campfire?
Building a great campfire doesn’t have to be complicated! The classic “Teepee” style is a simple and effective method to get your fire roaring.
Start with Tinder: Place a small pile of tinder in the center of your fire pit. Excellent options are included in the Kindled Provisions fire starter kit or you can use dryer lint, newspaper, dry bark, pine needles, or dry grass in a pinch.
Add Kindling: Surround your tinder with thinly split pieces of wood known as “kindling.” Arrange them in a circular formation, leaning the tops together so they stand upright. Gradually increase the size of the kindling, adding twigs that are about a quarter to half an inch thick.
Incorporate Wood: Once your kindling is stacked, place your firewood around the outer circle. Start with three logs to create a solid base. Light the Fire: Use a match to ignite your kindling. As the flames rise, they will catch the larger pieces of fuel wood.
Maintain the Fire: As the Teepee structure collapses, simply add more logs to keep the fire burning strong.
How should I store my firewood?
Firewood should be stored off the ground and away from the walls of a building to allow air to flow around the wood. The top of the stack should be loosely covered to prevent it from getting soaking wet or icing over. Covering firewood with a tarp or stacking it under a lean-to should be sufficient. It is safe to store kiln-dried firewood in your home.
Does firewood go bad?
Firewood quality can deteriorate over time. Things like improper storage, exposure to weather, and fluctuating temperatures can significantly impact its quality. Additionally, failing to remove rotting or diseased wood from your storage area can spread to otherwise healthy firewood stored along with it.
How long does it take until wet firewood is dry?
If your properly stacked firewood got wet in a rain or snowstorm, it should only take a few hours or possibly a day or two to be completely dry again, in the right conditions. Placing wet wood near your wood furnace is a great way to ensure your firewood dries out as quickly as possible, and the normally dry air surrounding a stove or furnace would likely benefit from the addition of some damp logs. If you don’t need the wood in the next couple days, you can leave the wood in its outdoor storage and it’ll dry over the next week or two, naturally, in the sunshine as air circulates around the damp logs.
