Burning Questions: Why is Kiln-Dried Firewood the Best?

Kiln-dried firewood makes your fire-making experience simpler and more memorable, thanks to the numerous advantages of a special process. Not all kiln-dried firewood is the same, so we’ll dive into what goes into ours and what sets it apart. Kindled Provisions kiln-dried firewood undergoes a controlled, 48-hour heat-treatment process in a kiln, significantly reducing its moisture content and enhancing its overall quality. The kilns we use are purpose-built for firewood. We heat the kilns to 275 degrees Fahrenheit to make the wood dry for optimal burning and eliminate any potential mold spores or pests.

Operating similarly to large convection ovens, our kilns ensure consistent and thorough drying, resulting in wood that looks fresh and new but is, on average 50% dryer than most other available firewood products. Our kiln-dried hardwood firewood is dried to between 5-8% moisture content. In comparison, seasoned firewood is typically around 20%+ moisture content, while green hardwood can be around 60% moisture content.

Seasoned vs. Kiln-Dried Firewood

Kiln-dried firewood provides near-instant gratification in the lighting process. If you want to light a fire quickly, our kiln-dried firewood will set ablaze faster than any other wood on the market. You’ll also experience a cleaner, more comfortable burn as kiln-dried firewood produces minimal smoke and ash. It’s ideal for indoor fireplaces, stoves, and chimneys.

Burning Questions: What is Kiln-Dried Firewood

As you browse the firewood marketplace, you’ve likely noticed there’s kiln-dried firewood, but there’s also seasoned firewood and green firewood. Let’s break down the differences. The seasoned variety is not a bad choice, it takes up to 15 minutes to light, and it emits a fair amount of smoke. It also tends to burn inconsistently, leaving a higher chance for creosote build-up. It’s also not ideal for indoor storage if you want to avoid mold and pests. That said, it is a good choice for buying in bulk for outdoor activities as it is designed to season outdoors under dry storage. Green firewood is freshly cut wood that retains its 60% moisture content. While it requires a longer drying period before it’s ready for optimal burning, its value lies in its lower cost and availability, making it a practical choice for those who can season their own firewood.

Burning Questions: How Do I Use Firewood Safely?

Safety should always be a priority when working with firewood. When burning firewood indoors, choose dense hardwoods. Softer wood species burn faster and don’t create long-lasting coals. Avoid firewood with a lot of moisture that causes smoke, as it leaves a residue that may lead to chimney fires. And when it comes to cooking, don’t get fancy with it – steer clear of painted, pressure-treated, ground-treated, stained, or manufactured wood products. They might look interesting and it might be tempting to burn some leftover lumber you grabbed at a hardware store, but they will likely release toxic gasses.
